Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we are introduced to a variety of women who had a significant impact on the story of redemption found in the Bible. Women from different social classes, nationalities, ages, and backgrounds had a profound influence in the events that unfold in Scripture. We see widows and orphans, old women and young girls, live out the calling that God had given them. Throughout each woman's story, God's steadfast love and constant grace are evidenced.
Though written in a time when women were seen as secondary in society, the Bible shows great honor and respect to women. Women play very significant roles in a great number of biblical narratives. From the creation story, to the lives of the patriarchs, to the heads of government, the Old Testament shows women who served their families and their nation with remarkable bravery. The New Testament shows women as followers of Jesus every bit as passionate as the disciples and apostles. In fact, it is to a woman, the Samaritan woman at the well, that Jesus first revealed that He was the Messiah. And it was to another woman, Mary Magdalene, who after the resurrection Jesus would first reveal Himself to. The Bible defied the culture of the day by elevating and honoring women.
These women are like you and me. Their lives are a mixture of deep faith in a sovereign and loving God and the doubt and worry that come so naturally to us as humans. Their lives are marked by their love for their Savior and the grace that only He can give.
These women are daughters of grace.
